TEKNIKER-IK4  is heading the European foremost project, the leading project being carried out at present in Europe to develop new advanced materials able to combine low friction with enhanced mechanical properties and wear resistance, a traditional demand by industry. The project has a budget of 19 million and counts on the participation of 31 organisations from 13 countries, including such companies as Rolls Royce, EADS and Renault, and aims to develop significant applications in the aeronautical, automotive and machine tool sectors, amongst others.

Foremost, part of the 6th European Union Framework programme, will last for 4 and a half years and is designed to develop new coatings and lubricants based on the incorporation of inorganic fullerene nanoparticles (microscopic particles of a molecule in tough, superimposed layers), polymer coatings, paints, greases and oils to reduce friction, while enhancing the wear resistance of mechanical components.

This will allow us to lengthen useful life, cut maintenance requirements and reduce the environmental impact of a wide range of mechanical components used in the aerospace, automotive, energy generation and industrial manufacturing sectors.

As well as the role played by Tekniker-IK4 as project coordinator, we should highlight the presence of such leading companies as EADS, Rolls-Royce, Renault and Goodrich, who will evaluate the new materials using test components and real parts used in their respective sectors. Others taking part in the project include NanoMaterials from Israel, the Anglo-Swiss company IonBond, Fuchs from Germany and Spolchemie from the Czech Republic, who will incorporate the fullerenes into lubricants, greases, polymer paints and resins.

As well as Tekniker-IK4, these synthesis and incorporation activities will also count on the participation of another 14 technological centres and universities that are internationally recognised for their know-how in the fields of Materials Sciences and Surface Physics. In addition, Tekniker-IK4 and another 7 expert technological centres and universities are studying the friction, wear and lubrication of the new materials in order to define the limits to their use in practice.

Foremost is one of five major projects that Tekniker-IK4 is taking part in at present and the Centre has become one of the leading players in recent European Union Scientific and Technological Research Framework Programmes, something that has helped to make it one of Europe's leading scientific and technological partners in Europe.

With over 25 years experience of applied technology research and transfer of the results to business, Tekniker-IK4 has acquired a high degree of specialisation in four broad fields (Precision Engineering and Mechatronics, Surface Engineering, Production Engineering and Automation and Manufacturing Technologies), allowing it to place its cutting-edge technology at the service of all kinds of tasks. In 2008, the Eibar-based technological centre had a turnover of almost 19 million Euros.
